Disney+ Claims 26.5 Million Subscribers Already!
Disney+ Has Blockbuster Numbers
The Walt Disney Company just announced its earnings report for the fiscal first quarter of 2020. While MickeyBlog will cover those updates in detail, we want to give you a quick update about some fantastic news.
Disney just revealed subscriber data for its new OTT streaming service. Suffice to say that CEO Robert Iger and his team are celebrating right now. The company reports that 26.5 million people (!!!) have signed up for Disney+.
Yes, 26.5 Million!
As a reminder, analysts had initially projected that the service would gain 10 million subscribers by the end of 2020. Friends, it’s only February 4th, yet Disney has crushed those estimates! It may have them tripled by winter’s end!
How fast is the growth of Disney+? Hulu launched in 2007. Disney now owns this streaming service and has helped it expand rapidly. After nearly 13 years, Hulu claims 30.4 million users.
As a reminder, Disney+ didn’t even launch until November 12th! Yes, in less than three months, it’s nearly matched the decade-plus base of Hulu! And here’s another impressive statistic!
A Netflix Killer? Maybe.
Netflix recently claimed on its financial earnings report that 61 million Americans subscribe to its service. Yes, the dominant paid online video consumption vendor barely beats the combined number of users for Hulu and Disney+.
From the moment that Iger announced Disney+, analysts described it as a potential Netflix killer. Few people genuinely believed that such a thing could happen in the short term. While that’s still true, many observers are in shock right now as they watch Disney+ behave like a supernova.
At this point, Disney+ stakes a reasonable claim to the most successful online streaming service launch ever. Iger staked his entire reputation and legacy on this app. Right now, he looks like a genius.
Seriously, friends, if you had told any stock analyst in the world six months ago that Disney+ would have 26.5 million subscribers after three months, they’d have bought at the Disney stock they could afford. It’s a shockingly phenomenal number.
