Celebrate World Gorilla Day By Taking a Look At Some of Animal Kingdom’s Incredible Inhabitants
We can’t think of a better way to celebrate World Gorilla day then by paying tribute to some of the incredible western lowland gorillas found at Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World!
These years celebration particularly poignant as back in May, Disney welcomed the arrival of baby Grace. Born as part of the Species Survival Plan (which ensures the responsible breeding of endangered species) Grace’s name was aptly chosen. It pays tribute to the conservation work done by GRACE (Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center) located in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Baby Grace is growing bigger every day and her family has been teaching her the ropes including older brothers, Cory and Flint who love to give her piggyback rides under the watchful eye of her mom Kashata. Grace’s teeth are even started to grown in which she’ll test out on new foods!

Today is World Gorilla Day, and in celebration, we’d like to give you a glimpse at the western lowland gorillas in our care.
On a slightly more serious note, lowland gorillas are a critically endangered species. This is largely as a result of habitat and poaching. This means conservation efforts are more important then offer. With this in mind, Disney partners with organizations striving to protect gorillas in the wild in tandem with the Disney Conservation Fund. For more than a decade, Disney’s animal care team has shared their skills, resources and expertise with GRACE (the world’s only sanctuary for orphaned Grauer’s gorillas.
Some of the ways that this collaboraton has helped the gorillas population are definitely worthy of note. Disney is sending veterinarians, keepers and educators to the Congo to help establish facilities and assist with Gorilla care. Innovative solutions have come to light through this collaboration. For example, Disney’s vets and animal nutritionists have developed a special biscuit recipe for GRACE to help the gorillas get nutrients without getting tooth decay. The recipe was perfected first at Animal Kingdom first before being offered to those in the Congo.
So next time you’re at Disney’s Animal Kingdom be sure to take some time away from the hustle and bustle of headlining attractions to appreciate these incredible creatures as part of the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail.
