Lion King is 4th Disney Film To Cross $1 Billion Mark This Year
It’s been a banner year for Disney films! From the absolute smash that was Avengers: Endgame to the surprise sleeper hit of the summer Aladdin the hits just keep rolling in. That’s why it will come as little surprise to Disney fans that The Lion King is the latest in the line of long-running hits.
Jon Favreau’s live-action adaptation of the Disney animated classic featuring Donald Glover as the voice of Simba and Beyonce as the voice of Nala is the fourth Disney title to surpass the $1 billion mark in global ticket sales this year. Add this to the success of the films mentioned above and others like Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home and it’s easy to see Disney’s utter domination of film space!
According to a recent piece in Variety this means that Disney has nearly 38% of the domestic market share. This cut increases to a mightly 40% when Fox (which Disney required earlier this year) is taken into account.
This is just one of many milestones for The Lion King. It is already the 5th biggest global release of the year, grossing $361 million at the domestic box office and $638 overseas.
The Walt Disney Company has a lot to celebrate with this and other releases. As we reported earlier this week, the Company set an all-time record for global ticket sales for a single studio. It hit the $7.67 billion mark worldwide smashing the marks set back in $7.61 billion and it’s only July.
Disney’s upward box office trend shows no signs of slowing. Just take a look at the incredible releases on the horizon including Frozen 2, Maleficent, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. This means that Disney could add at least another $1 billion by years end!
