Disneyland’s Cosmetologists Win Union Battle For Increased Wages
The licensed cosmetologists at Disneyland Resort will now be getting paid a higher wage to work their magic! The Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild, IATSE Local 706 recent won a push for about 100 backstage workers at Disneyland Resort to have their wages raised.
According to a recent piece on the Orange County register on October 1, union members ratified a new three-year contract boosting minimum wages starting at $20 per hour. Some workers with a higher skill level can see their pay increase to $20 per hour. One cast member, Deserea Parrish had this to say of the increase: “It’s life-changing because I can think about the future now instead of feeling like I have to live paycheck to paycheck,” she says. “I can live within my means.”
As with other locals, the union conceded to “Management Rights” allowing the Walt Disney Company to alter or end—without any negotiation—existing perks such as sign-ins, holiday passes and special enamel pins. But the cosmetologists represented by the union also won the right to proudly wear their IATSE pins on the job.
