Chris Evans Reflects on His Profanity-Laced ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Monologue
While Deadpool & Wolverine was full of Marvel Easter eggs, callbacks, and familiar faces, the biggest surprise was Chris Evans’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Evans, of course, played Captain America in the MCU for eight years, appearing in 12 different films before exiting after Avengers: Endgame.
For Deadpool & Wolverine, however, the actor did not portray the famous first Avenger but instead reprised his role as Johnny Storm from 2005’s Fantastic Four and its sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
In Deadpool & Wolverine, the titular heroes encounter Johnny Storm in the Void. At first, Reynolds’s Merc with the Mouth assumes he is meeting Captain America. Then, however, Evans yells, “Flame on!” and takes to the sky.
Reynolds Called Evans With the Idea
In a recent interview with People, Evans explained how his comeback came about.
“It was a couple years ago and I got a text from Ryan [Reynolds], we’re buddies. He just said, ‘Listen, if you don’t like this idea, no worries whatsoever. But I have something that could really bring the house down and would let you play a character from your past,'” Evans explained.
“I mean, honestly, I would do anything Ryan asked. He gave me a great cameo in ‘Free Guy’ already, and I just trust him completely. So the chance to be again, I couldn’t pass up. I loved it.”
A Different Side of Chris Evans
Unfortunately, Johnny meets a gruesome death after Deadpool tells Cassandra Nova the vulgar things that the Fantastic Four member said about her. While many assumed that the Merc With the Mouth was putting words in Evans’s mouth, that ended up not being the case.
In Deadpool & Wolverine‘s post-credit scene, Evans gives a foul-mouthed monologue, revealing that everything Deadpool said was true.
According to the actor, Reynolds offered to let him use cue cards. Evans, however, was having none of it.
“It was fun to shoot, fun to watch, all of it … Ryan was like, ‘Listen, if we need cue cards…’ and I was like, ‘Cue cards? I’m showing up off-book,'” Evans explained.
“I don’t get to say dialogue like this. Trust me. I’m going to enjoy every second of this. Memorized.”
Why Evans Returned
Evans has previously given credit to Reynolds for facilitating his return, noting:
“Honestly, Ryan might be the only guy that I would’ve done it for because he’s just got the Midas touch. His self-awareness makes him almost invincible. He makes the joke before the audience gets a chance to make the joke, so if you’re going to revisit a character and you have to find a way to make it work, Ryan’s humor makes just about everything work, so you feel an automatic sense of safety.”
Deadpool & Wolverine is in theaters now.
