Karan Soni Says ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Is Exactly What the MCU Needs
After a rough 2023 at the box office, Marvel turned to Ryan Reynolds and his Deadpool franchise to turn things around. As the only film released by Marvel Studios in 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine has been tasked with carrying perhaps the biggest movie franchise of all time forward.
So far, it looks like Marvel’s faith has paid off. Deadpool & Wolverine is currently trending towards a $200 million opening, which would shatter the record for an R-rated film.

While Deadpool & Wolverine looks like it will be both a blockbuster and the lifeline that Marvel desperately needed, the road to theaters has not been easy for the film.
‘Deadpool 3’ Looked Unlikely
Following the success of 2018’s Deadpool 2 and Disney’s subsequent purchase of 20th Century Fox, Marvel Studios decided that it wanted to take a shot at making a Deadpool 3. While director Sean Levy jumped at the chance to join the franchise, Reynolds and his team had a hard time coming up with a story for the third film.
Just when it seemed as if time had run out and a third Deadpool film would not materialize, Hugh Jackman called and said that he wanted to make a Deadpool and Wolverine movie. Suddenly, everything fell into place.
Karan Soni Praises Ryan Reynolds
In a recent interview with US Magazine, Deadpool star Karan Soni discussed the long road to theaters for Deadpool & Wolverine. Looking back on the film’s development, Soni believes it got better as time went on.

“Ryan has worked really, really hard on it,” Son told Us. “It’s a long time coming, but it was one of those things — where because it was such a long time — it’s gotten really good. The script was really good. It was in a very good place.”
Will Reynolds Save the MCU?
Soni also admitted that he has seen Marvel’s struggles of late, but the actor believes that Deadpool & Wolverine is exactly what the MCU needs — especially with Jackman involved.

“There was a version of [the script] before Hugh Jackman said yes,” Soni said. “Because they waited because he said yes — I think it’s all the things combining and I think it’s coming at the right time for the MCU, which is in need of something fresh. And I would not bet against Ryan.”
