‘The Acolyte’ Fans Are Upset About One Character’s Death, But Leslye Headland Says the Moment Was Necessary
The latest chapter in the Star Wars story debuted last week when The Acolyte premiered on Disney+.
Set during the era of the High Republic, The Acolyte opened with a mysterious assassin, confronting and then killing Carrie-Anne Moss’s Jedi Master Indara.

While the murder of Master Indara would kick off the events of the series and lay the groundwork for the show’s narrative, the offing of Carrie-Anne Moss’s character just moments into the show raised the ire of many fans who were excited to see the legendary action actress enter the Star Wars universe.
‘The Acolyte’ Creator Says Indara’s Early Death Was Necessary
According to series creator Leslye Headland, however, the death of Moss’s Jedi Master was necessary to set the tone for the rest of the series.

“From a filmmaker perspective, I just felt like with the cold open, especially with a new story, that you just have to go hard,” Headland explained to Total Film. “You have to say the Jedi are going to take some Ls; you’re not going to know who the good guys and the bad guys are. And it’s going to feel very visceral.”
While some fans were unhappy with how Moss was advertised as a major player in The Acolyte, only to be killed moments into the first episode, Headland argues that the gravitas of the actress helped bring the moment together.

“Even if you already know it’s going to happen, it doesn’t have to be a big gotcha moment,” she added. “It just has to be a moment where the emotional and the physical – meaning the fights – melt together. Carrie-Anne, not just being an action legend, is also a phenomenal actress. She was able to play all those beats within the fight as well as, of course, her death scene.”
Will We See Moss’s Jedi Master Again?
With six episodes remaining in The Acolyte’s first season, there is still the strong possibility that we will see Master Indara again in flashbacks. With Mae bent on revenge against the four Jedi who were on her home planet when it went up in flames, it looks like we still have much to learn about Master Indara.
