August 30th was a big day in Disney history, with the groundbreaking on a new Walt Disney World resort, the release of a Lilo and Stitch movie, and the closure of a Disney’s Hollywood Studios attraction. So, let’s get started!
Pluto’s Dream House Released (1940)
On this day in 1940, the Pluto short Pluto’s Dream House was released.
In the cartoon, Mickey finds a magic lamp that builds Pluto a doghouse.
Walt Disney Receives Award (1943)
On this day in 1943, Walt Disney was awarded the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle.
The medal was given to Walt as a reward for services to humankind or Mexico.
Dumb Bell Of Yukon Released (1946)
On this day in 1946, the Donald Duck cartoon Dumb Bell of the Yukon was released.
In the cartoon, Donald heads to the Yukon Territory to hunt for a fur coat for Daisy.
Construction on Disney’s Wedding Pavilion Begins (1994)
On this day in 1994, a ground-breaking ceremony was held for Disney’s Wedding Pavilion.
The new Victorian-themed structure would eventually open on July 15, 1995.
Groundbreaking Takes Place At Disney’s Coronado Springs (1995)
On this day in 1995, a groundbreaking ceremony took place for Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort.
Set around a 15-acre lake, the new moderate resort was themed after regions of Mexico and the American Southwest.
The First Kid Released (1996)
On this day in 1996, The First Kid was released.
The film starred Sinbad as Sam Simms, a former boxer who must look after the 13-year-old son of the President of the United States.
Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has A Glitch (2005)
On this day in 2005, Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch was released.
The direct-to-video sequel to Lilo and Stitch was the third film in the franchise’s history.
The Honda ASIMO Theater Opens (2007)
On this day in 2007, the Honda ASIMO Theater opened inside Disneyland’s Innoventions.
The new exhibit allowed guests to interact with ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility), a humanoid robot.
The Little Mermaid Ends Broadway Run (2009)
On this day in 2009, Disney’s Broadway music The Little Mermaid gave its final performance at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.
A national tour of the show would launch in 2010.
The American Idol Experience Closes (2014)
Finally, on this day in 2014, The American Idol Experience closed at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
The attraction, which allowed guests to live out their musical dreams, had originally opened in 2009.
