Texas High School Drill Team Under Fire As They Performed An Inappropriate Cheer
Disney has made great steps in the last few years as being inclusive and trying to rid the company of any racist and culturally inappropriate matters. One example includes the 12-second, non-skippable warning before viewing such films as Peter Pan on Disney+.
Last week, a Texas high school drill team called the “Indianettes” from Port Neches-Groves High School used Native American stereotypes in a live performance, exactly what Disney is trying to get away from and bring awareness to. Their chants included phrases such as “scalp ‘em Indians, scalp ‘em”.
A tribal attorney and activist Tara Houska took to Twitter and expressed how this performance was “nostalgic racism” and the chants were “dehumanizing” to any of the team’s Native American schoolmates. Disney quickly got word of the incident and issued a statement.
“We regret this performance took place as it did not reflect the audition tape that was submitted. we have immediately put measures in place to ensure performances reflect the auditions”.
The principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, Chuck Hoskins Jr, also called out the Port Neches-Groves High School saying they have been in contact with the school before and asking the district he discontinue the use of “offensive imagery, chanting, symbolism and other practices” for years, but were ignored.
The Port Neches-Groves school district has since issued a statement to KFDM-TV in Beaumont, Texas, saying they are “aware of the concern regarding the performance of our band and Indianettes at Disney World. We are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in our school district. Our district is nearing 100 years old, and our Board of Trustees is committed to always making the best decisions for our students, staff, and the communities of Port Neches and Groves.”
