Disney and Coca-Cola Potentially Phasing Out All Plastic Products
News has surfaced recently of plans Disney has put in place to contribute their best to an ever-growing, waste-conscious way of operating.
This comes by way of their partnership with Coca-Cola, one that has seen both parties commit to limited, and possibly doing away with altogether, plastic products sold in all Disney parks by 2022.
The contribution plastic plays to the harmful pollution of our ocean and subsequent sea life has made the issue a pressing one for the two companies; while both should be applauded for their effort in such a quick turnaround.
The Walt Disney Company has already stopped the use of plastic straws, and encourage the use of reusable bags on Walt Disney World and Disneyland, and this seems like the next logical step.
The question that arises, and the most pressing for the operations of both companies, is; what is the alternative?
Despite its horrid effect on sea life, plastic has become an undeniable staple in the American consumer experience. For better or worse, plastic is here. The question is twofold; how do we get rid of it, and what do we put in its place?

For Coca-Cola and Disney, the answer may come in new developments that have been made in the functionality and sustainability of paper-based products.
There are currently tests being done in Europe on newly developed paper-based bottles and caps, which should garner a more certain timeline of when, or even if, Disney and Coca-Cola’s plan for plastic elimination can be done.

There is uncertainty as to the confidence both sides have in the paper-based alternatives, but the assumption is that their timeline of plastic elimination by 2022, or 2023 at the latest, speaks to a certainty that paper will be the quickest solution to eliminate their contribution to oceanic pollution.
There is much work to be done, and there is little concrete evidence to the reporting of these transitions actually taking place, but the reports and rumors seem to point to the direction Disney is heading in the next few years.

They have shown a commitment to alternative methods of product development, and their partnership with Coca-Cola speaks to the impact they will surely make with their newfound direction.
