Disneyland Reaches Return To Work Agreements With 11 Employee Unions
Though Disneyland is still waiting on an official reopening plan from the State of California, the Walt Disney Company has negotiated with 11 unions representing cast members on return to work COVID-19 policies including health and safety measures. According to a recent piece in the Orange County Register this will ensure that Disneyland can bring back staff as soon as they are able to reopen.
New health and safety measures for working Disneyland cast members include free COVID-19 testing for employees who feel like they might have symptoms or may have been in close contact at work with someone infected with the virus.
If you’ve been following along with MickeyBlog then you know that Disneyland, Disney California Adventure and other theme parks in the state closed in Mid-March and have remained closed ever since. Downtown Disney, which is Disneyland’s downtown shopping and dining district has been reopened since July.
Agreements reached include one with Workers United Local 50. This is Disneyland Resort’s second largest union and successful negotiations will ensure that food and beverage cast members can return to work as soon as the State gives them the go ahead. Other unions that Disney has reached agreements with includes the Master Services Council Independent Employee Services Association, Craft Maintenance Council and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.
Earlier this month, The Walt Disney Company announced that 28,000 employees would be laid off across domestic theme parks and Disney Cruise line as the company continues to face financial hardship due to the impact that COVID-19 has had on the travel and tourism industries.
For Disneyland, it is estimated that some 8,700 employes will face unemployment. Workers Union Local 50 did announce earlier this month that 2,858 cast members represented by the union will be impacted by the layoffs. This will include restaurant workers, food cart vendors and staff at Club 33.
