May 21st was a slower day in Disney history, but it featured the release of a Donald Duck cartoon, the return of a Magic Kingdom favorite, and the debut of a Disneyland parade and firework show. So, let’s get started!
Donald’s Dream Voice Released (1948)
On this day in 1948, Donald’s Dream Voice was released.
In the cartoon, Donald tries to sell brushes door-to-door, but since nobody can understand him, he can’t sell anything.
Pigs is Pigs Released (1954)
On this day in 1954, the Disney cartoon Pigs is Pigs was released.
An adaptation of a short story of the same name by Ellis Parker Butler, the cartoon tells the story of a couple of guinea pigs who cause chaos at the Westcote railroad station.
Clarence “Ducky” Nash Honored (1984)
On this day in 1984, Clarence “Ducky” Nash left his footprints in the cement outside the Chinese Theater in Hollywood, California.
Nash was best known for his work as the voice of Donald Duck.
Main Street Electrical Parade Returns (1999)
On this day in 1999, the Main Street Electrical Parade returned to the Magic Kingdom.
Brought back for the Millennium Celebration, the procession would run through April 2001.
The American Idol Experience Opening Announced (2008)
On this day in 2008, Jordan Sparks announced that the American Idol Experience would open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in January 2009.
The announcement was made during the season finale of American Idol.
Disney’s VMK Shut Down (2008)
Also on this day in 2008, Disney’s Virtual Magic Kingdom (VMK) shut down.
Virtualmagickingdomcom shut down at 10 p.m. The free social gaming site allowed players to make avatars and chat and play games inside a virtual theme park environment.
Paint the Night and Disneyland Forever Premiere
On this day in 2015, Paint the Night and Disneyland Forever premiered at Disneyland.
The nighttime parade and firework show were added to the park for Disneyland’s 60th anniversary.
