This Day in Disney History- February 2
Welcome back to our continuing journey through the history of the Walt Disney Company! Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- February 2.
February 2nd featured the debut of “Walt’s last film”, the opening of a Walt Disney World resort, and the end of a Pleasure Island nightclub. Let’s get started!
Disney Acquires The Rights to Zorro (1953)
On this day in 1953, Walt Disney signed a licensing deal with Mitchell Gertz for the rights to create a Zorro TV series.
The show would eventually debut in 1957 and run for 78 episodes.
Project Florida A Whole New Disney World is Shown (1967)
On this day in 1967, Roy O. Disney premiered Project Florida A Whole New Disney World.
Screened for business and government figures, the 25 minute film features Walt Disney outlining his plans for EPCOT.
Monkeys, Go Home! Released (1967)
Also on this day in 1967, Monkeys, Go Home! was released.
Starring Dean Jones, the film to the story of a young man who learns he is he heir to French olive farm.
Mickeys, Go Home! is notable for being Maurice Chevalier’s last film appearance.
Filming Begins on Splash Too (1988)
On this day in 1988, filming began for the television movie Splash Too.
A sequel to the 1984 feature film, Splash Too was filmed at the Disney-MGM Studios!
Dixie Landings Opened (1992)
On this day in 1992, Disney’s Dixie Landings Resort opened.
Disney’s newest resort, Dixie Landings was themed after the Louisiana countryside. The resort would eventually be renamed Port Orleans Riverside in 2001 .
Disney Announces Pirates of the Caribbean Refurbishment (2006)
On this day in 2006, Disney announced that Pirates of the Caribbean at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World would be closing for refurbishment.
The refurbishment was scheduled so that Imagineers could insert characters from the popular Pirates of the Caribbean film series into the attraction.
Rock ‘n’ Roll Beach Club Closes (2008)
Finally, on this day in 2008, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Beach Club closed at Disney World’s Pleasure Island.
Originally opening in 1990, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Beach Club would be replaced, along with the rest of the Pleasure Island nightclubs, by new restaurants.
