The Wisdom of Walt Disney
I’ve been thinking about Walt Disney’s infinitely quotable career a lot lately. As a constant innovator, Disney gained a foothold in media in a way that has never been duplicated.

Throughout his storied career, he never lost sight of life’s everyday struggles, though.
I admire his tenacity, his optimism, and his Midwestern sensibility. Here are a few of my favorite quotes that highlight the wisdom of Walt Disney.
Adversity
I’m not one to complain, but I had a rough September. My mother grew ill, a dear friend was hospitalized multiple times, another had emergency cancer surgery, and my wife’s been sick.
With the world pressing down on me, I’ve thought a lot about adversity. So, I read a quote from Walt Disney on this subject, and I found solace in it.

“All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me. You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.”
None of us ever wants a hard kick in the teeth. That’s a dental bill waiting to happen. Still, the message here resonates because it’s so often true.

We never really know when adverse conditions lead to otherwise impossible advances and achievements. I often think about a former Atlanta Braves pitcher named Chuck James.
He broke both his wrists in a freak swimming accident, and it forced him to change his delivery. As a result, he gained better movement and quickly made the major league roster.

Sometimes, good things happen in trying times, and Walt Disney understood that.
Complexity and Optimism
Here’s something Walt Disney and I have in common. I suspect it’s a trait among Disney fans, too. We’re all sunny optimists by nature, which explains why Disney stories speak to us.
Many of them look at the bright side of life, ending with a fitting Happily Ever After. Those good vibes stem from the top of the food chain, as they were Uncle Walt’s mantra.

“I always like to look on the optimistic side of life, but I am realistic enough to know that life is a complex matter.” That’s a profound way of explaining a person’s entire ethos.
Walt Disney recognized that life rarely works out exactly how we expect. Despite the roadblocks we constantly face in life, we remain optimistic as a rule.

In this way, Walt Disney found his community and people by creating them. Disneyland created a clarion call for upbeat souls to head to The Happiest Place on Earth.
Courage and Dreams
The Walt Disney Company is now squarely in the middle of its expansion era. Disney parks are adding more new attractions and experiences than at any point in the company’s history.
So, some of today’s quotes speak to the need for ambition. People should dream with their lives and then try to turn those dreams into a reality.

Walt Disney agrees with me on the point, as he so eloquently stated here: “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.”
He knows this topic, too. I mean, just think about it. His first company failed, yet he took the same idea to Hollywood.

Objectively, that was a harder place to make a dream come true, yet Disney did it. In fact, the entrepreneur managed this feat several times with movies, television shows, and theme parks.
Walt Disney never failed to dream big, and he always had the courage to try.
The Importance of Self-Worth
Here’s one of my all-time favorite Walt Disney quotes: “The more you like yourself, the less you are like anyone else, which makes you unique.”
I can honestly say that there’s nobody else like me on this planet. No, I’m not necessarily saying that as a good thing, as I’m stubbornly different.

However, this quote explains why I’m perfectly okay with being so unique. I’m fortunate enough to be comfortable in my own skin, and I sincerely hope you are, too.
If not, Walt Disney himself would like you to work on that. You’re good, too!
Motivation
I write several thousand words a day basically every day of my life. In fact, on my recent Disney cruise, I didn’t write a word for four consecutive days.
Upon reflection, I couldn’t remember the last time I’d gone that long without writing. I’m such a sicko that I even wrote when hospitalized for several days in 2024.

So, I’m one of the blessed few content creators who rarely face the fear of the blank page. Walt Disney shared that trait. He had it to the nth degree as a tireless creator.
What was the secret to his success and prolific nature? It’s the wisdom of a simple quote: “The way to get started is to quit talking and start doing.”

Walt Disney didn’t spend all his time lamenting the loss of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. On the train ride home from what could have been the defining failure of his career, Disney improvised.
He created a character you may know: Mickey Mouse. Then, he created Steamboat Willie. Later, he willed the first feature-length animated movie into existence.

For his next trick, he conquered television, and while doing that, he built Disneyland. Walt Disney “quit talking and start(ed) doing” a LOT.
Working in a Changing Marketplace
Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress ably encapsulated his entire lifetime of changes. From his birth through the 1964 New York World’s Fair, Walt watched technology evolve.

Had he not adapted, The Walt Disney Company would have collapsed. Instead, the company is about to turn 103 years old. To reach that incredible milestone, Disney needed to adapt. Once again, the company leaned on the wisdom of its founder, who said:
“Times and conditions change so rapidly that we must keep our aim constantly focused on the future.”

This is another eerily prescient statement that could just as easily apply today. The company is currently trying to find ways to utilize AI effectively.
Simultaneously, CEO Josh D’Amaro is attempting to evolve Disney+ into a One Disney hub.

In these ways, Disney is keeping its aim focused on the future, just as Walt would have intended.
