Geoffrey Rush Reveals What It Would Take to Facilitate His ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 6’ Return

It is no secret that Disney has plans to revive the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise with a sixth installment.

At first, it looked like two Pirates movies were in development: one to continue the franchise’s main storyline and a spinoff centered on a new character played by Margot Robbie.

Eventually, however, those plans were consolidated into a single film.

“We had two scripts at one point, and then one kind of dropped out, and we kind of went with the other one,” producer Jerry Bruckheimer explained.

The last time we checked in, we reported that Johnny Depp was in talks to return for Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

Now, another franchise star has broken their silence.

Would Jeffrey Rush Return as Captain Barbossa

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Geoffrey Rush shared what it would take to get him to reprise his role as Captain Barbossa in Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

Thankfully, the actor sounded open to the idea.

“I think there’s been a big enough break,” Rush explains during a recent visit to EW’s studio at the Toronto International Film Festival. “And I sacrificed myself for my daughter. I don’t want it to be too cheesy and too easy that I come back and go, ‘Give me another payday.’ I respect the scale of the opera that’s almost been created in that 20-year period.”

The Ghost of Barbossa?

While Captain Barbossa died to save his daughter in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Rush believes that his character could still return.

“I go to Shakespeare and go to Hamlet’s father comes back as a ghost, and I thought that could be really,” he says, before trailing off. “It’ll take good writing, but just to come back and annoy Jack Sparrow for one more go, you know? I’d even say get the fans to write in what they’d like to see happen.”

As Barbossa has cheated death once before in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, it is conceivable that he could do it again.

For now, however, we will have to see how Pirates of the Caribbean 6 comes together.
