Sora From ‘Kingdom Hearts’ is Coming to ‘Fortnite’ This Week
Two properties of note for the contemporary Walt Disney Company have converged, as Sora from the Kingdom Hearts video game series is coming to Fortnite.
Fortnite announced the character’s imminent arrival over the weekend via a social media video.

A firm date has not yet been announced, though the player skin will become available “this week.”

Sora will become available as part of the popular game’s ongoing “Override” season. The offering launched last month and is video game-themed, with medium icons like Sonic the Hedgehog, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot making their Fortnite debuts as part of the season.
Sora was featured in the season’s promotional art, so his ultimate addition to the game has been known for a while. This is, however, our first look at how he’ll appear in the game and our first indication regarding the timeline.

He appears with a Keyblade in the short video, though it doesn’t feature its signature Mickey charm. It instead has a llama bauble.
A Timely Crossover

This announcement is perhaps less interesting on its face than it is when viewed through the lens of ambition, as both Kingdom Hearts and Fortnite are entities of particular interest to modern Disney.

Kingdom Hearts, a Square Enix-developed series of video games that launched in 2002, has long had a very passionate fanbase, though Disney has seemingly just recently realized its potential as a broader IP.
The company announced at last month’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event that a Kingdom Hearts anime series is currently in development for Disney Channel and Disney+. Kingdom Hearts 4, the newest game in the series, will also hit shelves next year.

On the Fortnite front, Disney announced a $1.5 billion investment in publisher Epic Games in 2024. Thus began development on “an all-new games and entertainment universe” that will serve as a digital crossroads, of sorts, for Disney’s various facets.

Though functionally a video game, the ultimate product will serve as the intersection of Disney’s digital and physical worlds. We’re seeing our first signs of this right now with the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run | Fortnite collaboration.
Guests at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at both Disneyland Park and Disney’s Hollywood Studios can earn in-game rewards for completing tasks within the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run queue.

The crossover between Kingdom Hearts and Fortnite is by no means surprising given Disney’s current interest in both brands. If trends persist, we’ll likely see a lot more of both properties in the coming years.
