Disney announced the imminent addition of a plaque honoring Kirby at this year’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. That expo occurred just two weeks ago, so this is a pretty quick turnaround (though the date is fitting, as August 28 is Kirby’s birthday).
To say that Kirby is a figure intrinsically linked with the comic medium would be an understatement. His artwork brought to life some of Marvel’s most enduring characters, making his drawings significant contributions not only to the company, but to culture.

Kirby is the co-creator of the Avengers, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, Captain America, Black Panther, Thor—the list goes on. He’s directly responsible for several of Marvel’s pillars, earning him the nickname “The King” from comic fans.

Marvel, as the multimedia behemoth it is today, simply does not exist without Kirby’s contributions. This new plaque is a great way to honor his unparalleled legacy.
More About Kirby

Kirby’s first job in the comics industry came with packager Eisner & Iger, which was essentially a company to which publishers outsourced comic creation and production. Kirby worked on several different strips before taking a job with Fox Feature Syndicate, where he would meet cartoonist Joe Simon.
The two would ultimately collaborate on the creation of Captain America for Timely Comics, the predecessor to Marvel. The character’s success led to Kirby’s appointment as Timely’s art director.

Kirby and Simon soon left Timely due to a financial dispute, joining National Comics Publications (which would become DC Comics). Kirby would then serve in World War II, working for several companies after returning from the war before rejoining what would become Marvel in 1958.
He co-created the Fantastic Four with Stan Lee in 1961, prompting a prolonged stint in which the two essentially defined the comic medium. He would leave Marvel for DC in the early 1970s, where he would launch his ambitious Fourth World saga.

Kirby passed away in 1994. He was posthumously inducted as a Disney Legend in 2017.
