A Brief History of Animal Kingdom
When Walt Disney planned The Happiest Place on Earth, he wanted a little bit of everything. Uncle Walt asked his Imagineers about the feasibility of real animals on the Jungle Cruise.
Already facing a tight deadline, the Imagineers guffawed at the joke.
Then, they realized that their boss was serious. It got awkward.
Eventually, Disney’s staff talked him out of the idea of living animals at a theme park.
Somehow, the idea gestated from the early 1950s through the mid-1990s, though.

When Disney’s 1990s CEO, Michael Eisner, planned the Disney Decade, he understood the assignment.
He plotted an entire theme park based on the idea Walt Disney had for Jungle Cruise.

This magical new place would combine the thrills of theme parks with the warmth of zoos. Animal Kingdom fittingly opened on Earth Day in 1998.
Animal Kingdom has remained a steadfast supporter of conservationism since its inception. More importantly, the park has honored and augmented its roots.
At its core, Animal Kingdom remains an outdoor zoo standing side by side with terrific rides.
Years before the park opened, Eisner and his crew recognized the daring nature of their plans.
To create a zoo of this scale, Disney would need experts in the field.
At one point, Animal Kingdom’s construction phase created a zoologist shortage.
Disney hired so many of the world’s foremost leaders in animal behavior that other zoos suffered.
Their long-tenured employees defected to Disney, recognizing a chance to do something unprecedented. In the middle of Florida swampland, these zoologists did the impossible.
They created gorgeous natural habitats for dozens of species of animals.
Many of them are natural predators in the wild. At Animal Kingdom, they live together in harmony.
While other Disney parks claim better attendance, this park is the company’s greatest achievement.
The Theme Park Side of Animal Kingdom

Currently, Animal Kingdom is a park in transition due to its impending expansion.
Disney has reclaimed the land formerly held by DinoLand USA.
DinoLand
In its stead, the Tropical Americas will debut in 2027, housing Encanto and Indiana Jones experiences.
For the time being, guests can explore six main areas, one of which is really just an entrance. You’ll cross the Oasis to reach Discovery Island and other parts of the park.
At Discovery Island, you’ll encounter the first theme park attraction.

Zootopia: Better Zoogether! is a new show that opened in 2025, based on the popular franchise.
Disney timed this one perfectly, as Zootopia 2 hit theaters around the same time.

You’ll discover several show-based attractions like this one at Animal Kingdom.
The most popular of them is Festival of the Lion King, but there’s also another. Disney modernized Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond! for the 2020s.
Still, if you can pick just one, The Lion King is the must-do on the list.
You’ll find this show at Harambe Village aka the Africa themed land.
Kilimanjaro Safaris, the heart and soul of Animal Kingdom, is the main ride here.

This Jeep ride through several savannahs is the best way to watch the park’s residents live their lives.
Frankly, no visit to Animal Kingdom could ever be complete without it.
To the south of Africa, you’ll discover Pandora – The World of Avatar.
This themed land is in its tenth year now, yet it remains the most popular part of the park.

Guests rush to ride Avatar Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey each day.
Meanwhile, Asia is north of Discovery Island. It’s home to Kali River Rapids and Expedition Everest. You’ll want to ride all these attractions and should have plenty of time to do so.
Bluey and the Animals
Bluey’s Wild World
Bluey’s Wild World opened in May 2026 and immediately impacted park behavior.
Families head to the Wildlife Express Train in Africa. It carries them to Conservation Station. As the name implies, this section of the park embraces zoology.
However, Disney has added a liberal dose of Bluey to make it more fun.

In fact, Disney went so far as to add Australian animals to this area.
So, you can really feel Bluey’s influence throughout Conservation Station.
Bluey’s Wild World
Most importantly, you can play games like Keepy Uppy and participate in a Bluey dance party.
Let’s just say that kids never want to leave Bluey’s Wild World. To them, it’s The Good Place.
Throughout Animal Kingdom, you’ll encounter other animal-based experiences.
Discovery Island Trails, Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, and Maharajah Jungle Trek are all must-dos. You’ll (safely) walk through animal habitats and watch them interact with one another.
A couple of years ago, a baby gorilla joined her family at Gorilla Falls.
Her presence caused a sensation as Disney fans could literally watch her learn about life.
These are the magical moments Walt Disney had envisioned in the 1950s. They come to life at Animal Kingdom each day, reinforcing a simple point.
This is a place where you should take your time and remember the park’s name.
Bluey’s Wild World
Animal Kingdom may host rides, but you’re here for the adorable creatures. And Bluey.
While you’re there, you’ll want to check out the Tree of Life.
Also, be on the lookout for countless character greetings, such as Kevin, Dug, and Russell from Up!
Dining at Animal Kingdom
Flame Tree Barbecue
Finally, you should understand a couple of things about Animal Kingdom.
This is by far the largest park at Walt Disney World. Also, it can get a bit hot.
Disney must do that to keep the animals comfortable, knowing humans can better adapt.
So, you will eat and drink more at this park out of necessity. You’ll be glad that you did because the dining options here are exquisite.
Places like Flame Tree Barbecue and Satu’li Canteen serve affordable yet delicious cuisine.
Tiffins
Fans of fine dining can visit Tiffins Restaurant or Yak & Yeti Restaurant.
Tusker House also serves a Mickey Mouse character meal that’s wildly popular.
DOLE Whip Pineapple Juice Float with Coconut Rum
Also, you’ll find any number of snack kiosks here, many of which serve ice cream treats.
For example, Dole Whip fans can get their fix at Tamu Tamu Refreshments. Other snack shacks sell things like pizza, popcorn, and even coffee.
Oh, and tired parents and Disney Adults will be happy to know that alcohol is seemingly everywhere.
Dawa Bar, Nomad Lounge, and Pongu Pongu can all cure what ails you.
Frankly, Animal Kingdom is a triumphant park due to its diverse experiences and tourist options.
