Hurricane Forecast Drops Again as Experts Predict Quieter Season
Good weather news and hurricane update! Colorado State University researchers have just reduced the Atlantic hurricane season outlook for a second time.
They now predict a quieter-than-average year than initially expected.

Forecasters currently expect nine named storms, including four hurricanes and one major hurricane, through the end of the season on November 30.
The updated forecast is well below the historical averages of 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.
El Niño’s Influence
Why the most recent change? Researchers point to a strengthening El Niño pattern in the Pacific Ocean as the primary reason for the downgrade.
According to the CSU report, “We anticipate the powerful El Niño being the dominant factor,” which can increase wind shear across the Atlantic, disrupting developing tropical systems.

The report also notes that sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean remain near average. This provides less fuel for storm development than in past years.
Preparation Still Matters

Despite the quieter outlook, experts stress that residents should remain prepared. The report states, “it only takes one hurricane making landfall to make an active season.”
Emergency plans, supplies, and storm readiness should remain a priority throughout hurricane season.
