Hong Kong Disney Immerses Guests in Their Favorite Stories With New ‘Pixar Pals Spectacular’ Nighttime Show
Hong Kong Disneyland is getting an infusion of new magic this summer with the debut of Pixar Pals Spectacular.
Part of the resort’s Pixar Summer Fest, the new nighttime spectacular transforms the Castle of Magical Dreams on Main Street, U.S.A., into a celebration of Pixar storytelling.

Here is the story of how the new show came together.
A Show About Friendship
When Disney Live Entertainment developed the new show, the creative team set out to bring the worlds of Pixar together around the common theme of friendship.

Pixar Pals Spectacular begins with the iconic Pixar Lamp and Ball appearing in the sky through synchronized drone choreography.
From there, the story continues through numerous Pixar films, highlighting the friendships between beloved characters along the way.

“Friendship is a theme that runs throughout all our lives, from our very earliest memories through our formative years into adulthood, where our friends shape who we are,” Show Director Matt Coombes shared. “We had a lot of fun discussing the friendships from the Pixar canon that would resonate the most with our guests, as well as those moments which had the most emotional weight.”

The emotional journey starts with Buzz Lightyear and Woody before moving on to Mike and Sulley from Monsters, Inc., Lightning McQueen and Mater from Cars, Carl and Russell from Up, and Marlin and Dory from Finding Nemo.
An Awe-Inspiring Scale
Not only does Pixar Pals Spectacular tell an amazing story, but it also does so on an unprecedented scale.

Instead of focusing solely on the Castle of Magical Dreams, Hong Kong Disneyland uses all of Main Street, U.S.A., as its canvas.
Icons like the Monsters, Inc. doors, Nemo’s underwater home, and Carl’s house from Up come to life as the story unfolds.

“We leaned into the art of Pixar as our inspiration to allow us to transform the architecture in a fun and surprising way,” Matt explained. “The credit sequences of many Pixar films provided fantastic artistic inspiration for these projections and animations.”
Using Technology to Tell the Story
To tell its story, Pixar Pals Spectacular uses cutting-edge technology, combining projection mapping, lighting, fountains, lasers, drones, inflatable character figures, and new arrangements of Pixar music into a singular experience.

“The show began as a unified story — defining mood, scale, and emotional flow before any technology was selected,” explained producer Laetitia Laetitia. “The focus was on layering imagery, movement, and rhythm into one cohesive canvas. This ensures every discipline contributes to a single, immersive experience.”

For example, The Incredibles sequence in the show uses drones, projection mapping, lighting, and lasers together to immerse guests in the action.
Bridging Generations
One goal the team had when creating Pixar Pals Spectacular was to bridge generations. To that end, the show utilizes characters from throughout Pixar’s history.

“The most rewarding part has been bridging generations,” said Laetitia. “Seeing characters from Toy Story or Up coexist seamlessly with Turning Red and Inside Out creates a shared emotional experience across ages.”
