Disney’s Live-Action ‘Moana’ Is Now Tracking Towards a Disappointing Opening
After striking box office gold with Toy Story 5, Disney is preparing for its next major summer release.
Ten years after the original animated film captivated audiences around the world, Disney’s live-action Moana is getting ready to sail into theaters.

This time around, newcomer Catherine Lagaʻaia will portray the titular wayfinder, while Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as Maui.
Joining them are John Tui as Moana’s father, Chief Tui; Frankie Adams as her mother, Sina; and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala.

“In Disney’s live-action reimagining of the beloved Oscar-nominated animated adventure, Moana answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people,” the film’s synopsis reads.
Moana’s Box-Office Prospects
The last time we checked in on Moana‘s box office prospects, the film was tracking toward an $85 million opening weekend.

With just three days to go until its release, we now have updated numbers to share.
The Latest Numbers
There may be choppy waters ahead for Disney’s Moana, as the film is now tracking toward a domestic opening of around $60 million.
Internationally, the film is tracking towards a $70 million debut, for a global opening of $130 million.

Additionally, according to The Quorum (via Comic Book News), nearly 80% of those surveyed were aware that Moana is heading to theaters.
Despite that, only 49% said they were interested in seeing the film.
That is not ideal.
The Road Ahead
With a budget of more than $200 million, Moana is going to have its work cut out to turn a profit.

Interestingly, Moana‘s biggest competition at the box office will be the aforementioned Toy Story 5.
It appears that Disney may have overestimated demand for a live-action Moana just 10 years after the original animated film’s release and less than two years after Moana 2 sailed into theaters.

While there is still a chance that the live-action Moana can turn things around, especially if it earns strong audience reviews, for now, the film may be in danger of flopping.
