Walt Disney Archives Shares Historic Artifacts to Honor America’s 250th Anniversary
The Fourth of July is just around the corner, and America is getting ready to celebrate its 250th anniversary. The Walt Disney Company is joining in on the fun and honoring the history between the company and the country.
The Walt Disney Archives is also shining a spotlight on several significant artifacts that showcase Disney’s long-standing connection to American history, culture, and storytelling.
Among the featured items are an early Disneyland concept pitch book, the American flag used during Magic Kingdom’s 1971 dedication ceremony, and a Declaration of Independence prop from National Treasure.
Walt’s Vision for Disneyland
The original Disneyland artwork offers a glimpse into Walt Disney’s plans for the park long before opening day. The sketches reveal early concepts for Main Street, U.S.A., honoring the moments and ambiance of the Midwest, as well as a futuristic Tomorrowland.
These two lands are designed to represent both America’s past and future.
Rebecca Cline, Director of the Walt Disney Archives, explained that the artwork helped “articulate his own dreams and point of view for what he wanted to create.”
She also noted that Tomorrowland “reflects a profound faith in innovation and in the idea that American ingenuity can shape a better, more hopeful future.”
More Than Theme Park History
According to Cline, “Disney has long celebrated the American experience through storytelling — offering something alive, something shared, and something each generation is invited to engage with in its own ways.”
These artifacts showcase how Disney has explored American ideals, history, and optimism through both its parks and films for decades.
Walt Disney World opened in 1971, and many of the American ideals built into Disneyland were already deeply into the Disney company’s identity.
One of the most moving and impactful is the daily Flag Retreat ceremony. The origin of this tradition dates back to the Opening Day of Disneyland on July 17, 1955, and continues today in both parks.
Guests can view the American Flag gifted by the President of the United States on Magic Kingdom’s opening day.
National Treasure Connection
The Walt Disney Archives also includes the Declaration of Independence prop from the 2004 film National Treasure.
The movie treats the Declaration with honor and respect, not just a prop. They build an entire treasure hunt and story around this item – similar to the storytelling magic that Disney utilizes.
