Dr. Mark Penning’s Social Media Transitions to ‘Animals at Disney’
After an illustrious career leading Disney’s Animal Care team, Dr. Mark Penning announced his retirement from the company earlier this year.
For years, Dr. Penning served as vice president of animals, science, and environment for Disney Experiences, overseeing animal care, conservation, and environmental initiatives at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, and beyond.

Last month, however, the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources announced that Dr. Penning had been appointed director of the North Carolina Zoo.
“I am very excited to be moving to the beautiful state of North Carolina. And to be joining the fabulous team at the North Carolina Zoo,” Penning said.

“I have long admired the zoo with its stunningly picturesque setting, modern animal habitats, engaging experiences for visitors, and talented team of zoo professionals. They have created a world-class destination where families can connect with nature. And experience the joy and wonder of being outdoors. It is an honor and a privilege for me to join the team.”
A New Chapter Begins
As Dr. Penning’s time at Disney comes to an end, he took to Instagram today to thank Cast Members for their commitment to animal care.

“I am so proud of our incredible cast,” Penning said.
“They’re out there every day protecting wildlife in wild habitats around the globe as they bring these stories to life.”

Then, Dr. Penning made the big announcement that his social media accounts would change their name to @AnimalsatDisney.

While the animal care team’s social media handle is changing, its commitment to conservation, environmental stewardship, and storytelling remains the same.
