‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Had a Catastrophic Third Weekend in Theaters
After a seven-year break, The Mandalorian & Grogu brought Star Wars back to theaters last month.
A spinoff of the popular Disney+ series The Mandalorian, the film returns audiences to the era of the New Republic and follows Din Djarin and his young apprentice as they hunt down the remnants of the Empire.

“The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and his young apprentice Grogu,” the film’s synopsis explains.
A Strong Start
Despite mixed reviews, The Mandalorian & Grogu got off to a strong start at the box office, delivering a $167 million global debut.

As we have previously written, Lucasfilm marketed the latest Star Wars film to families, not franchise die-hards.
The hope was that a summer audience would turn out to see the wildly popular Grogu, even if they were not caught up on the latest Star Wars developments.

Unfortunately, that strategy failed to generate long-term momentum.
During its second weekend in theaters, the film earned a paltry $25 million domestically, representing a 70% drop from its opening weekend.

Now, we have another disappointing update.
The Wheels Fall Off
In its third weekend, The Mandalorian & Grogu stumbled again, falling another 59% and dropping out of the domestic box office top five.

By the time the dust had settled, the film had earned just $10 million.
As of this writing, The Mandalorian & Grogu has grossed $155.8 million domestically and $137.8 million overseas for a worldwide total of $293.6 million.

With a reported production budget of $165 million, it appears increasingly unlikely that the film will turn a theatrical profit.
The Bright Side
The good news for Disney is that Grogu remains one of the company’s most popular merchandise characters.

Additionally, the film will likely provide a boost to Disney+ when it eventually arrives on streaming.
So, while The Mandalorian & Grogu was undoubtedly a disappointment at the box office, it may not be the disaster that some have painted it as.
