Kendi the Rhino Sees Clearly Again After Rare Surgery at Disney’s Animal Kingdom
It is no secret that the Animal Care team at Disney’s Animal Kingdom has a passion for their wildlife and knows their animals well.
So when the team noticed changes in the health of their resident rhino, they knew they had to act quickly and carefully, helping her undergo surgery to see more clearly again.
A Routine Exam Reveals a Serious Concern

Disney
Animal care experts recently noticed subtle cloudiness developing in the right eye of Kendi, a 27-year-old white rhino who has lived at Disney’s Animal Kingdom her entire life.
After careful monitoring and veterinary evaluations, the team diagnosed cataracts, a condition that can gradually lead to blindness if left untreated.

Because vision plays an important role in how rhinos navigate their environment, the discovery prompted Disney’s veterinary team to begin planning a treatment strategy ASAP.
A Rare Surgery

Performing cataract surgery on a white rhino is exceptionally uncommon and requires years of preparation.
“I’ve planned for this one procedure more than any other in my life,” said Dr. Betsy. “It’s been one of the most rewarding moments of my career.”

Disney veterinarians partnered with specialists from the University of Florida to develop a customized surgical approach for one of the world’s largest land mammals.
“It was truly an honor to be part of Kendi’s care,” said Dr. Caryn Plummer, ophthalmologist with the University of Florida.
The good news? The surgery was completed successfully and Kendi can see.
Disney Teams Come Together for Recovery

Disney
Kendi’s recovery required major team collaboration, monitoring, and an equally creative and unusual solution. Disney’s costuming team spent two years developing a custom protective eye mask designed specifically for the rhino.
“This was definitely outside the scope of what our team is usually asked to do,” said Tracy, a costuming manager.
Kendi’s Future

Today, Kendi has returned to the savanna with renewed confidence. Her story further highlights the innovation, collaboration, and conservation efforts of Disney’s Animal Care Team.
