A Quick Guide to EPCOT
When you visit Walt Disney World, Magic Kingdom is objectively the place to go.
This park is the most popular one in the world, but it’s also just one of four.

The Walt Disney Company purchased 40 square miles of land in Florida.
Walt Disney himself stealthily made these purchases to build his dream project.

His plan never came to fruition due to unfortunate circumstances.
Thankfully, his Imagineers still found a way to honor his legacy with a fitting theme park. Here’s a quick guide to EPCOT, the final community Walt Disney planned before his death.
A Brief History of EPCOT

In 1965, Walt Disney presented his grand vision for the city of tomorrow.
He called it the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow or E.P.C.O.T. for short.
Uncle Walt couldn’t have possibly known at the time that he would die soon.
Barely a year later, the creator of Mickey Mouse died, leaving the E.P.C.O.T. project in ruins. His older brother Roy picked up the mantle and built Walt Disney World.
Alas, he died almost immediately afterward, which once again delayed E.P.C.O.T.
The project Walt Disney had wanted the most in 1965 wouldn’t arrive until 1982.
Someone born on the day of the announcement would have been almost an adult by then.

Unfortunately, Uncle Walt’s plans were no longer feasible by then, either.
E.P.C.O.T. the city evolved into EPCOT, the theme park of Walt Disney’s dreams.

The entrepreneur had treasured his time working on projects for the 1964 New York World’s Fair. He loved the modular, autonomous nature of the pavilions and especially the vibe.
Citizens of all nations joined together at the World’s Fair to share their cultures and cuisines.
Walt Disney wanted that for his community of tomorrow. EPCOT has that today.
A Theme Park in Transition

Historically, EPCOT consisted of two sections: Future World and the World Showcase.
Alas, keeping a place called Future World looking futuristic is a challenging task.
Imagineers have done an incredible job at Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland.
Maintaining two places with a similar theme proved to be too much, though.
As the 2010s ended, Disney split the former Future World into three parts.
Now, EPCOT consists of four themed lands. They are:
- World Celebration
- World Discovery
- World Nature
- World Showcase
The World Showcase section remains largely the same, but the others are quite different.
Disney has reinvigorated several parts of the park with entirely new experiences.
The Other Themed Areas
At World Celebration, the anchor is Spaceship Earth, EPCOT’s major landmark.
You can see the silver golf ball in the sky from your plane as you fly over Orlando. What you may not realize is that you can take a ride inside this structure.
World Celebration also includes the Imagination! pavilion, a vibrant building.
That statement applies to many of EPCOT’s pavilions. The architecture here is timeless.

World Celebration Gardens and Dreamers Point provide ideal comfort when you just want to hang out at the park.
Speaking of which, hanging out at EPCOT has become the thing to do in the 2020s.

Well, it always was, but Disney has leaned into the behavior this decade.
At World Celebration Gardens and Dreamers Point, you’ll find ample seating and even character greetings.
CommuniCore Hall — Once Upon a Stage
CommuniCore Hall & Plaza offers a Mickey Mouse interaction, and that’s not all.
This part of the park changes to match the current EPCOT festival at the time. World Discovery is the thrill ride section of the front half of the park.
Disney added the Wonders of Xandar pavilion, which is a Marvel themed land.
The former World of Motion pavilion is now the Test Track building.
Also, Mission: SPACE resides in this area. So, yeah, this is where you go for action.
World of Nature covers the right/east side of the park, presuming you use the main entrance.
The primary pavilions here are The Land and The Seas with Nemo & Friends.
You’ll also find a marvelous walkthrough attraction here called Journey of Water | Inspired by Moana.
The Rides and Shows
EPCOT is a top-heavy park in terms of its E-ticket rides.
Here are the ones that will require the longest waits during your visit:
- Frozen Ever After
- Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind
- Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure
- Soarin’ Around the World/Soarin’ Across America
- Test Track

The park’s other very good rides typically don’t require long waits. They are:
- Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros
- Journey into Imagination with Figment
- Living with the Land
- Mission: SPACE
- The Seas with Nemo & Friends
- Spaceship Earth
You’ll juggle between standing in long lines for five rides and walking right on the others.
American Adventure – EPCOT

However, these aren’t the only form of entertainment at EPCOT, as the shows are great, too.
The American Adventure discusses some of the highlights of our country’s history. Awesome Planet expands the story to the entire planet. It’s a cute, real estate-styled story.
My favorite is the Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along, which retells the classic story from LeFou’s perspective.

Then, we have the fun at the back of the park, which I’ve saved until now.
The Splendor of the World Showcase
The World Showcase is a thriving, vibrant cultural awareness program disguised as a theme park.
At the various pavilions, you’ll find a number of live performances.
On any given day, you can watch drummers, vocalists, acrobats, or a juggler.
Each pavilion hosts its own unique activities, all of which are worth your time. For example, you can learn about Norse myths or Japanese Kawaii culture.
Most importantly, you can eat, drink, and be merry at all the pavilions.
The World Showcase doubles as the hub for various EPCOT festivals.
You can visit one of these most days on the annual calendar.

Each festival varies in theme and amenities, but the gist remains the same.
Disney serves limited-time exclusive foods, drinks, and merchandise.
Fans flock to the park on every festival’s opening day to savor all the new goodies.
They do this because EPCOT has mastered the art of festival goodies.

For this reason, I always encourage people to visit Walt Disney World during an EPCOT festival.
Even on non-festival days, you’ll discover a plethora of things to do, though.
Literally every international pavilion celebrates its country’s origins and customs.The cuisine is also authentic to the culture, which means you’ll eat like royalty.
Whether you’re in the mood for Mexican, French, or Chinese pavilion, you know where to go.
Head to the appropriate pavilion and prepare for one of the best meals of your life.
EPCOT is the unquestioned champion in theme park dining, and the World Showcase is the hub.
You should eat here as much as physically possible during a Disney vacation.
What to Know about an EPCOT Visit

Think of EPCOT as the dessert during your Disney vacation.
This is the park visit you should savor and stretch out as much as possible. Since only a few rides require extended waits, you should adopt a more casual approach.
Take your time and explore as much as possible, especially the World Showcase pavilions.

When in doubt, grab a stiff drink and a quick bite and go shopping.
You’ll have the time of your life as the world’s happiest tourist.
