Disney Wins First Round of MiniMax AI Lawsuit
Last September, The Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Universal Pictures filed an important lawsuit against MiniMax, arguing that its image and video-generating service, Hailuo AI, was developed through the unauthorized use of intellectual property.
According to the studios, MiniMax also disregarded U.S. copyright laws and failed to take action after the companies requested safeguards to prevent infringement.

“A responsible approach to AI innovation is critical, and today’s lawsuit against MiniMax again demonstrates our shared commitment to holding accountable those who violate copyright laws, wherever they may be based,” the companies said in a statement.
The Studios Win Round 1
Ten months after the initial lawsuit was filed, the studios have won an early legal battle, as U.S. District Judge Stanley Blumenfeld rejected MiniMax’s motion to dismiss the case.

The Chinese company had argued that California was not the proper venue for the legal battle, as MiniMax conducts all of its business in China.
Blumenfeld, however, noted that the company was offering its Hailuo app in the United States, giving the court jurisdiction.

Additionally, the judge rejected MiniMax’s argument that the studios had failed to bring a valid claim, noting that the lawsuit “plainly alleges plausible claims” for copyright infringement.
An Important Lawsuit
The MiniMax lawsuit is particularly consequential, as the company is transitioning to a publicly traded status with a valuation exceeding $4 billion.

Disney, Universal, and Warner Bros. are asking the judge to halt the infringement, award restitution, and require the defendant to cease operations until proper copyright protections are in place.
Perhaps more importantly, however, the suit could set legal precedent that impacts future AI litigation.
