“I don’t know if the saga goes beyond this point. I hope it does,” Cameron told EW.

“But, you know, we prove that business case every time we go out… If we don’t get to make 4 and 5, for whatever reason, I’ll hold a press conference and I’ll tell you what we were gonna do. How’s that?”

Eventually, the third installment made nearly $1.5 billion at the global box office.
Questions About the Future
While the film was undoubtedly a success for Cameron and Disney, its box office haul was a far cry from the record-setting grosses of Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water.
When Fire and Ash‘s $400 million budget was factored in, questions began to emerge about the franchise’s long-term viability. In short, would Disney be willing to front nearly half a billion dollars for diminishing returns?

Now, Cameron has finally broken his silence.
Cameron Wants to Make ‘Avatar’ Films Twice as Fast at Two-Thirds the Cost
During a recent appearance on The Empire Film Podcast, James Cameron confirmed that he is working on Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. His process, however, will be different this time around.

“We’re gonna be looking at some new technologies to try and do them more efficiently, because they’re hideously expensive and take a long time. I want to do them in half the time for two-thirds of the cost, that’s my metric,” he said.
“And so, it’s going to take us a year or so to figure out how to do that. And in the meantime, I’ll be writing and probably be doing a couple of other things.”

While it is unfair to say that Avatar: Fire and Ash was a box office disappointment, the days of studios producing films with $400 million budgets are numbered.
Thankfully, it sounds like Cameron has an idea of how to make the films on a tighter budget and on a quicker timeline.

That should give Avatar fans plenty of hope for the future.
