The ‘Zootopia’ Franchise Has Surpassed 1 Billion Hours Streamed on Disney+
Once upon a time, not so very long ago, former Disney CEO Bob Chapek made it clear that streaming was the company’s future.
In part necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, The Walt Disney Company began sending many of its biggest films straight to streaming while also shortening theatrical exclusivity windows. The goal was to increase Disney+ subscriber counts while also meeting consumers where they were.

While investing heavily in another distribution method made sense on paper, the strategy ultimately backfired.
The Consequences
Chapek’s focus on streaming signaled to audiences that they did not necessarily need to see Disney films in theaters. Instead, they could simply wait to watch them at home.

Additionally, the company spent billions developing original content for Disney+, even as the direct-to-consumer division continued to lose money.
Finally, Chapek found himself increasingly alienated from Disney’s creative talent.
Bob Iger’s Change of Strategy
When Bob Iger returned to lead Disney, he quickly determined that something needed to change.

Soon after his return, Iger announced that Disney would recommit itself to theatrical releases.
That shift in philosophy led to reduced Disney+ spending, longer theatrical release windows, and a renewed focus on promoting Disney’s biggest films as theatrical events.

Before long, Disney’s box office fortunes rebounded.
Perhaps more surprisingly, however, the strategy also strengthened Disney+.
Theatrical Blockbusters Drive Streaming Engagement
After years of experimentation, Disney discovered that blockbuster theatrical releases not only drove new subscribers to Disney+ but also increased engagement across the platform.

Essentially, if Disney could deliver a hit film in theaters, audiences would later head to Disney+ to watch it again and explore related content.
The strategy has continued to pay dividends.
The Success of ‘Zootopia 2’
During today’s fiscal year 2026 second-quarter earnings call, Josh D’Amaro revealed the stunning impact that the success of Zootopia 2 has had on Disney+.

According to D’Amaro, not only did Zootopia 2 generate $1.9 billion at the global box office, but it also drove major engagement on Disney+.
With the film’s release, the Zootopia franchise has surpassed 1 billion hours streamed on Disney+.

Outside of streaming, the blockbuster has also boosted fan engagement across the Disney Parks, Disney Cruise Line, and retail locations.
Rather than treating theatrical releases, streaming, and experiences as competing businesses, Iger and D’Amaro have shown that the different divisions can work together in unison.

This is clearly Disney’s best path forward.
