Disney Headlines for May 5th, 2026
This past week, The Walt Disney Company addressed a longstanding complaint.
Simultaneously, an MCU actor criticized the company, and the FCC picked a fight.

We take the good with the bad in the latest bunch of Disney Headlines.
A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy’s Edge…
I lived through the drama of 2019 at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. At the start of that year, all eyes turned toward an unopened themed land.

Expectations had grown so high for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge that it was an unwinnable situation.
Even though the themed land proved spectacular from the start, some still complained.

I heard it all at the time, with people even attacking the restaurant menus.
Disney didn’t spell out what a Kaadu was, which made some afraid to eat it.

Disney
I’ve never understood whether they thought it was Soylent Green or what.
Disney isn’t going to serve anybody bad proteins. That’s just common sense.

Blue and Green Milk in Galaxy’s Edge
Also, fans of the Green and Blue Milk flavors grew combative when arguing with haters.
I’m squarely on Team I Would Never Put That in My Mouth, but I got it.

For some critics, it wasn’t enough to dislike these things. Everyone else had to hate it, too.
The Yum-Yuckers were out in full force during the wildly successful launch of Galaxy’s Edge.

However, one criticism proved valid from the start, and Disney knew it.
Imagineers – or Bob Chapek? — chose to set Galaxy’s Edge in a specific era.

In the process, Disney effectively negated multiple Star Wars trilogies.
The company did the same thing with Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser.

We all know how that worked out. Galaxy’s Edge fans gave it a pass, though.
Since many experiences here are so wonderful, it’s not a dealbreaker like the “cruise” was.

Still, the forced timeline has been a problem from the start at Galaxy’s Edge.
Shattering the Arc of Time
I’ve always understood why Imagineers adopted this approach. After all, I’d have loved to watch Hank Aaron play baseball.

I couldn’t because of the difference in our ages and when he retired.
That’s just how life works, and Disney applied the concept to Galaxy’s Edge.

In the latest trilogy, Ben Solo turns on his parents, both of whom die.
So, we shouldn’t have character greetings between Kylo Ren and Han Solo.

The awkward family dynamic wouldn’t be pleasant for fans. Well, that’s the thinking anyway.
Yes, we suspend disbelief at Disney parks all the time.

If multiple Disney Princesses can hang out at the same restaurant, the Solo family can reunite.
This philosophy has driven most of the complaints about Galaxy’s Edge.

Finally, Disney has relented by shattering the arc of time.
Characters from all three Star Wars trilogies can now appear at the park.

As proof, Disney promptly unveiled Han Solo and Princess Leia.
Importantly, these changes are only occurring at Disneyland Park right now.

While I suspect Disney’s Hollywood Studios will eventually follow suit, it hasn’t yet.
For the time being, guests at this version of Galaxy’s Edge remain time-locked.

So, you’ll need to choose Disneyland to enjoy the untimed version of Star Wars.
For the moment, this version of Galaxy’s Edge is the clear favorite.

To a larger point, I can’t help but wonder if things could have been different at Galactic Starcruiser.
If Disney had opened up the entertainment options for all timelines, would it have done better?

We’ll never know, and I’ll admit that the price would have remained a dealbreaker to many.
The whole thing was such an unforced error. It’s nice to see Disney fixing this mistake.
Sting of the Wasp

The other two big Headlines this week are decidedly negative.
I try to maintain positivity with these updates, but it’s not always possible.

In this case, the story is just plain weird, as an MCU actor just attacked Disney.
Evangeline Lilly, the actress who plays Wasp in Marvel movies, criticized her employers.

On Instagram, she vented about Disney’s recent layoffs, saying:
“SHAME ON YOU for turning your back on the people who built the power you are now using to throw them away.”

Lilly felt a personal stake in this one, as one of the people fired had created the Wasp costume.
To the actress’s credit, she contacted Marvel to verify the reports were true.

So, she performed a bit more due diligence than many do when yelling on social media.
Lilly vented: “I can’t quite believe that, that Disney have let go of the artists who brought the current Marvel Universe to life through their imagination and their genius.”

And…she has a point. She even added to it by making the following comment:
“(The) people who invented these characters in the first place, who designed them in the first place, are now being replaced by AI.”

Then, she adds that AI will steal those same ideas and regurgitate them in new forms.
That’s…pretty much accurate across the board.
The FCC Renewals

I want to get into this Headline less than the one about The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.
So, yeah, this isn’t something fun to discuss, but here’s what’s happening.

As I’ve previously discussed, most ABC channels are licensed affiliates.
Third-party businesses like Nexstar and Tegna own the channels.

They license the content from Disney. Usually. Disney owns a handful of stations.
Well, the FCC just took the extraordinarily unusual step of reviewing Disney’s ABC broadcast licenses.

FCC
Disney needs those to, you know, broadcast. It’s potentially a big deal.
Realistically, it’s almost assuredly not, though, unless something unprecedented occurs. The last time that the FCC revoked a broadcast license was in 1969/1971.
That’s a complicated story, but the gist is that it hasn’t happened in 55 years.

What’s happening here is that the President is once again mad at Jimmy Kimmel.
After the comedian earned record ratings during his return, the situation appeared to be de-escalated.

This is no longer the case, and so the Commissioner of the FCC is threatening Disney.
The implication is that if Disney keeps Kimmel, it could lose its licenses. From a legal perspective, that’s nigh-impossible, but we’re living in strange times.
Right now, Disney seems to be in “Trust but verify” mode with how it handles this.

The company has stated that it’s happy to review its licenses, knowing it has done nothing wrong.
Technically, the FCC is evaluating Disney’s DEI hiring practices, not Kimmel’s jokes.

Disney+
Since those were never illegal, it’s an odd request from a legal perspective.
Few seem to be taking the matter seriously, but many are eyeing it warily.

You just never know these days. It’s probably just bluster, though.
