Searchlight Lands Rights to SXSW Breakout ‘Monitor’
Just days after acquiring the film rights to 99 Nights in the Forest, The Walt Disney Company has won another bidding war.
This time, Searchlight Pictures has acquired the rights to Monitor, the feature debut from Matt Black and Ryan Polly.

“Matt and Ryan have crafted a visceral, modern thriller that taps directly into our collective fear of what may lurk just out of view at the edges of our screens, delivering a truly wild ride. We can’t wait to bring it to audiences,” said Matthew Greenfield, president of Searchlight Pictures.
A SXSW Hit
Starring Brittany O’Grady, Viveik Kalra, Ines Høysæter Asserson, Gunner Willis, Sara Alexander, and Camila Bejarano Wahlgren, Monitor premiered at SXSW to strong reviews.

“After a disturbing video surfaces online, something begins to spread, moving from screen to screen and targeting anyone who watches. No escape. No warning. Once you’ve seen it, it’s already too late,” the film’s synopsis reads.
When Will the Film Hit Theaters?
At this time, Searchlight has not announced a release timeline for Monitor, though the expectation is that the film will arrive in theaters next year.

“When we made the original Monitor short film eight years ago, we never imagined it would one day find a home at Searchlight Pictures,” Black and Polly said in a statement.
“We’re beyond thrilled to be partnering with them to bring this story to theaters, where it truly belongs. Monitor was always meant to be experienced with a room full of people being terrified together. We’re incredibly grateful to our cast, crew, and partners at Temple Hill and Nostromo Pictures, who championed this project from the beginning.”
