Construction Moves Forward on Magic Kingdom’s ‘Cars’-Themed Expansion
Walt Disney World continues to expand in 2026. Walt Disney Imagineering has just taken another step forward on the upcoming Cars-themed expansion at Magic Kingdom.
A newly filed Notice of Commencement confirms that Balfour Beatty Construction will handle general construction for the Piston Peak project. The permit was just filed on April 8.
The Details
The permit lists the project location as 4995 Caribbean Way, placing it in the expansion area near Frontierland and just north of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
This filing signals a shift into full construction mode, moving beyond early site work and into building structures and attractions.
Balfour Beatty is a well-known contractor with experience on large-scale projects, including past work with Disney.
Their involvement suggests the project is entering a more advanced phase.

Are you ready for Piston Peak? Disney previously announced that Piston Peak will feature two new attractions.
The main ride is expected to be a high-energy rally race through mountain terrain, geysers, and mud paths.

Recent patent filings hint at new ride technology, updated vehicles, and systems that shift ride vehicles during the experience.
Disney has not shared an opening date yet, but more updates are expected later this year.
However, Disney has just released the opening date for Thunder Mountain. Mark your calendars for this updated experience, which will reopen to guests on May 3rd, 2026!
