From Storyboard to Final Film: See How Pixar Brought ‘Elio’ to Life
After the historic success of Inside Out 2, Pixar Animation Studios returned to theaters last summer with Elio, an original film that follows the story of an eleven-year-old boy fascinated by space.
“The cosmic misadventure introduces Elio, a space fanatic with an active imagination and a huge alien obsession. So, when he’s beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide. Elio’s all in for the epic undertaking,” the film’s synopsis reads.

“Mistakenly identified as Earth’s ambassador to the rest of the universe, Elio must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions, and somehow discover who and where he is truly meant to be.”
Critical Success
While Elio was not the box-office success Pixar had hoped for, the film earned strong reviews from critics.

It also received a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards and helped Pixar earn 10 Annie Award nominations.
Needless to say, despite its box office performance, Elio has its fans.

If you are among them, or simply enjoy animation as a medium, you will want to check out a new video shared by Pixar on Instagram.
From Storyboard to Final Design
In the clip, Pixar shows how a scene evolves from storyboard to layout to final design.

In the case of Elio, the sequence transitions from a 2D drawing to a fully realized 3D rendering in the film’s signature style.
