Magic Kingdom’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Will Reopen With a LOWERED Height Requirement!
It’s almost time to jump back onto the wildest ride in the wilderness!

Following an over-a-year-long refurbishment, the attraction will finally reopen to guests on May 3rd, 2026! Disney Parks Blog revealed the thunderous news this morning.

The refurbishment included new magical details around the ride, including a cavernous scene filled with phosphorescent pools, shimmering stalagmites and stalacites, and an ominous rumbling. But that’s not all–a new track and “refreshed” trains were also installed, prompting an exciting update for tinier miners.
Lowered Height Requirement – Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Thanks to the new track and trains, and a “comprehensive review” from safety teams, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen with a lowered height requirement. The new height requirement will be 38″, allowing more prospectors to enjoy the attraction!

Jeff Vahle, the President of Walt Disney World Resort, took to Instagram to congratulate the project team on the updates to the ride, including the increased availability resulting from the lowered height requirement.

For reference, the previous height requirement was 40″, which is also the current height requirement for Disneyland Park’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

So if you’ve got a kiddo who’s barely missing that 40″ requirement, they’ll be able to tackle Big Thunder Mountain Railroad when it reopens on May 3rd!
