Andrew Stanton Discusses the Real-World Conflict at the Heart of ‘Toy Story 5’
Thirty-one years after audiences were first introduced to Buzz Lightyear, Woody, and the rest of Andy’s toys, the gang will return to theaters this summer for Toy Story 5.
“The toys are back in Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5, and this time around it’s Toy meets Tech. Buzz, Woody, Jessie, and the rest of the gang’s jobs get exponentially harder when they go head-to-head with an all-new threat to playtime,” the film’s synopsis reads.

Technology vs. Play
With just months to go until Toy Story 5 hits theaters, Empire has released a new look at the upcoming film.

In an interview with the publication, director Andrew Stanton discussed the real-world inspiration behind the story.
“When tech comes in, it wins,” he said. “It happens to adults and kids. It just wins. So that was the more interesting angle to take. There’s no competition. Have a kid playing with toys, drop in a screen device, and see what happens. We leaned into that truth and had fun with it.”

According to Stanton, the conflict between technology and traditional play is at the heart of the film.
“The biggest thing that was lingering all this time is the way that technology has usurped playtime in real life. Lily is representative of what we’re up against,” he explained.
