Big Thunder Mountain Testing Underway in Magic Kingdom as Attraction Reopening Looms
If you have been reading along here at MickeyBlog over the last several months, you know that we have been eagerly anticipating the reopening of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
The iconic Magic Kingdom attraction closed in January 2025 for what was expected to be a year-long overhaul.

Sign Reinstallation – Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
While Disney initially kept details about the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness under wraps, we later learned that the attraction is receiving a full track replacement, refreshed rockwork, and an all-new show scene.

“After you arrive at the legendary Big Thunder Mining Company, descend into an active mine shaft and board your runaway train. As you enter the cavern, the engine accelerates along the rickety track. Dodge exploding dynamite and falling boulders as you race around tight turns, plunge into canyons, and dash through the town of Tumbleweed,” the attraction’s updated synopsis reads.

“Your rip-roaring adventure proves that some legends are true. You’re sure to have a real blast!”
The Attraction Will Reopen Next Month
While Disney has yet to announce an exact reopening date, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is expected to resume operations in early May as part of Cool Kid Summer.

With just about a month to go, we have an exciting update to share.
The Latest From Magic Kingdom
When visiting Magic Kingdom this afternoon, we were thrilled to see that ride vehicle testing is underway.

From our spot in Frontierland, we could once again see runaway trains racing across the refurbished track.

While this is not the first time we have seen Big Thunder Mountain cycling, it is still an exciting milestone.

Hopefully, today’s testing means the attraction’s reopening remains on schedule.

I, for one, can’t wait to ride the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness again.
