Hulu Shelves Plans For Its ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Reboot
In a surprising turn of events, Hulu has opted not to move ahead with its planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot.
Originally announced last year, the sequel series promised to tell the “next chapter” in Buffy’s story and would have seen Sarah Michelle Gellar reprise her iconic role as the titular hero.
Joining Gellar was to be joined by Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Skeleton Crew) as a new slayer.

“From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side,” Gellar said. “To have that kind of emotional intelligence and talent at such a young age is truly a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.”
Hulu Cancels Its ‘Buffy’ Plans
According to a report from Deadline, Hulu opted not to continue with Buffy: New Sunnydale after not being pleased with the pilot script.
Specifically, it sounds like director Chloe Zhao may not have been the right match for the project.

After Hulu passed on the project, Gellar took to Instagram to talk to fans.
“I want to thank Chloé Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots. And thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means, not only to me, but to all of you,” she said.

“This doesn’t change any of that, and I promise if the apocalypse actually comes…you can still beep me.”
The IP Is Not Dead
While Hulu is not moving forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale, the studio has not given up on the IP.
