Disney Shares Opening Timeline For Big Thunder Mountain Railroad’s Reopening
by Justin Hermes · March 12, 2026
If you’ve been following along with us here at MickeyBlog, you know we’ve been closely monitoring the ongoing refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
The beloved Magic Kingdom attraction closed in January 2025 for what is expected to be a year-long overhaul.

While Disney initially kept details about the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness under wraps, we later learned that the attraction is receiving a full track replacement, refreshed rockwork, and an all-new show scene.

“After you arrive at the legendary Big Thunder Mining Company, descend into an active mine shaft and board your runaway train. As you enter the cavern, the engine accelerates along the rickety track. Dodge exploding dynamite and falling boulders as you race around tight turns, plunge into canyons, and dash through the town of Tumbleweed,” the attraction’s updated synopsis reads.

“Your rip-roaring adventure proves that some legends are true. You’re sure to have a real blast!”
The Refurbishment Continues
As the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad refurbishment continues into its fifteenth month, anticipation for the ride’s reopening continues to build.

Earlier this month, we brought you an update on the new themed pavement that debuted outside of the attraction.

Now, we finally have an idea of when the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness will return.
Thunder Mountain Will Reopen in Early May
Walt Disney World announced early this morning that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will officially reopen in early May as part of Cool Kids’ Summer.

While an exact reopening date has yet to be revealed, it won’t be long before guests can set off into the mines again.
I, for one, can’t wait!
