‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Had a Shockingly Low Budget
Star Wars will return to theaters this May with the highly anticipated The Mandalorian & Grogu.
The first new Star Wars movie in seven years, the film is a spinoff of the popular Disney+ series The Mandalorian.
“The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu (as himself),” the film’s synopsis explains.

A New Era in Box Office History
As Lucasfilm prepares to reintroduce Star Wars to theaters, the studio knows the box-office landscape has changed drastically since 2019.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, delivering a box office hit has become more difficult. While Disney has certainly had its share of wins, the studio has also suffered some notable losses.
In recognition of the changing theatrical environment, we have seen studios like Marvel begin to rein in production budgets.

With The Mandalorian & Grogu, Lucasfilm will be following suit.

According to a report filed with the California Film Commission (via Collider), The Mandalorian & Grogu had a budget of just $166.4 million.

That is the lowest budget for a Star Wars film since Return of the Jedi in 1983.
For comparison, 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker reportedly had a budget exceeding $300 million. In fact, all three films in the Star Wars sequel trilogy carried production budgets north of $300 million.
While large production costs can be overcome with strong box office performance, the margin for error becomes much thinner.

By keeping costs under control, Lucasfilm is giving The Mandalorian & Grogu a much clearer path to profitability than many of its predecessors.
