Lucasfilm Responds to ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Trailer Backlash
As Star Wars prepares to return to theaters for the first time in seven years, all eyes were on last night’s Super Bowl commercial for The Mandalorian & Grogu.
With Disney prepared to release numerous blockbusters this year, including Hoppers, Toy Story 5, Moana, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Avengers: Doomsday, the studio had to choose which trailers it wanted to showcase during television’s biggest event.

In the end, it appears that Disney chose to go in chronological order, with Hoppers and The Mandalorian & Grogu receiving Super Bowl spots.
Needless to say, fans were excited.
A Curveball
While Disney did end up airing a trailer of sorts for The Mandalorian & Grogu, it was a far cry from what fans expected.

Instead of previewing the upcoming galactic adventure, Disney released a short clip that leaned into the feel of classic Super Bowl commercials.
The final result was a 30-second clip that featured Din Djarin and Grogu riding in a carriage powered by Tauntauns as a gravel-voiced narrator spoke.
The trailer played more like a Ford commercial than a Star Wars preview.
Lucasfilm Responds to the Backlash
Perhaps understandably, fans were disappointed not to see more of The Mandalorian’s next adventure.
After receiving backlash from fans, Lucasfilm addressed the unusual Mandalorian & Grogu trailer, which was directed by Jon Favreau.

“Our creative and marketing team landed on a unique concept that gave a nod to classic Big Game spots of years past,” said Ryan Stankevich, marketing brand lead for Lucasfilm.
“In partnership with Jon Favreau, the teams at Lucasfilm and ILM brought to life a spot that felt to us instantly iconic, cinematic, and quintessentially Star Wars. It captured the warmth, humor, and emotional connection between these two beloved characters and was the perfect next step for our campaign as we lead up to their big screen debut this summer.”
What to Make of the Trailer
While it is safe to say that some Star Wars fans have certainly overreacted to the Mandalorian & Grogu trailer, it does feel like the clip was a miss.

Instead of going the traditional route, Favreau and Lucasfilm took a big swing and missed.
The final result was a largely forgettable, temporarily disappointing trailer, not an iconic, cinematic, and quintessentially Star Wars moment.

In the end, the quality of the film will do the talking, but as a Star Wars feature film has not hit theaters in seven years, Disney needs The Mandalorian & Grogu to be a hit.

Perhaps now was not the time to use a Mandalorian to spoof a car commercial. This was not the way.
