Disney’s Live-Action ‘Bambi’ Remake Gets a Disappointing Update
by Justin Hermes · February 5, 2026
Once upon a time, not so very long ago, it appeared that a live-action Bambi movie would be coming to theaters.
Following the success of The Jungle Book and The Lion King remakes, Disney set out to remake Bambi, calling the film a “companion piece” to its previous live-action adaptations.

In 2020, it was announced that Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsey Beer were writing the script.
Subsequently, Sarah Polley agreed to direct the film, which was set to feature music by Kacey Musgraves.

Eventually, however, things fell apart for Bambi.
The Wheels Fall Off
Since the film was initially announced, the COVID-19 pandemic shut down theaters, Bob Chapek was ousted as Disney CEO, Bob Iger returned to the post, and the President of Walt Disney Motion Pictures, Sean Bailey, who had spearheaded the company’s live-action remake efforts, left Disney.

In 2024, then, it was no surprise that we learned Sarah Polley had exited the project.
Interestingly, however, two years after Bambi was left for dead, Geneva Robertson-Dworet has weighed in on the project again.
Robertson-Dworet Weighs in
In a recent interview with The Direct, Robertson-Dworet was asked about the ill-fated Bambi remake.

According to the screenwriter, she has not heard an update on the project in years.
“You know, it’s so funny. Fallout is such an intensely full-time job, like no joke. I have not found out in at least five years a single update on the Bambi movie,” she said.

“So I have been off it since I started on Fallout, and have not even kind of checked in, to be totally honest with you. That’s true.”
While Robertson-Dworet attributed her lack of information on the Bambi remake to her busy schedule, it is pretty clear that the project is no longer moving forward.

Unfortunately, like the planned remakes of The Sword in the Stone and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, a new Bambi movie was not meant to be.
