Earlier this year, Disney CEO Bob Iger shocked the themed entertainment world by announcing that the company would build a brand-new theme park in Abu Dhabi.
“This is a thrilling moment for our company as we announce plans to build an exciting Disney theme park resort in Abu Dhabi, whose culture is rich with an appreciation of the arts and creativity,” he said.

“As our seventh theme park destination, it will rise from this land in spectacular fashion, blending contemporary architecture with cutting-edge technology to offer guests deeply immersive entertainment experiences in unique and modern ways.”
A Long Time Coming
While the announcement initially seemed to come out of left field, Iger later explained that Disney had been exploring the idea of building a new destination in the Middle East as far back as 2017 or 2018.

Ultimately, Abu Dhabi was selected for its prime location at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa.

As Disney prepares to embark on this new adventure in the Middle East, Bob Iger took to Instagram yesterday to share photos from the future site of Disneyland Abu Dhabi.

“Walking the site of what will one day be Disneyland Abu Dhabi! Lots of work ahead, but all very exciting!”
Looking at the photos, it’s clear that construction still has a long way to go.

Nevertheless, the barren landscape captured in Iger’s images will one day be home to Disney’s first theme park in the Middle East.
I, for one, can’t wait to see how the park comes together.
