WATCH: The Demolition of Downtown Disney’s Temporary Earl of Sandwich Has Begun
Over the past several years, we here at MickeyBlog have been closely following the saga of the Downtown Disney temporary Earl of Sandwich.
For those who may not have been paying attention, Disneyland initially announced that the original Downtown Disney Earl of Sandwich location would close in 2022 as part of the transformation of the district’s West End.
The plan called for the fan-favorite restaurant to relocate to a new space featuring a table-service restaurant, along with a second-floor bar dubbed Carnaby Tavern.
While construction on the new building got underway, a temporary Earl of Sandwich opened inside the former La Brea Bakery location, which had originally been slated to become Porto’s Bakery.
When plans for Porto’s were later delayed, the temporary Earl of Sandwich received an unexpected extension.
More Complications
In June of this year, however, it appeared that Porto’s was finally ready to move forward. As a result, Disneyland Resort announced that the temporary Earl of Sandwich would close on July 26, with 167 employees set to be laid off.

Just when it seemed the temporary location’s story had reached its conclusion, construction on Porto’s Bakery was once again delayed, granting Earl of Sandwich a brief reprieve.

Ultimately, last November, the temporary Earl of Sandwich closed permanently.
Construction Has Been Underway
Since then, Disney has been preparing the site for demolition, clearing the way for construction on Porto’s to begin in earnest.

That brings us to today.
Demolition Has Begun
When we visited Downtown Disney this afternoon, we saw that the demolition of the old Earl of Sandwich building is underway.
Bulldozers were on the scene to help facilitate the construction.
From beyond the construction walls, we could see the old La Brea Bakery building come down.
Here is another look.
While Disney has yet to provide a timeline for when Porto’s will open, they are clearly not wasting anymore time.
Hopefully, we get an update on the location soon.
