Disney Shares New Photos of Magic Kingdom’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Refurbishment
If you’ve been following along with us on MickeyBlog, you know we’ve been closely tracking the ongoing refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
The beloved Magic Kingdom attraction closed in January 2025 for what is expected to be a year-long refurbishment.

While it wasn’t initially clear what Disney had planned for the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness, we later learned that the attraction is receiving a track replacement, refreshed rockwork, and an all-new show scene.
A New Scene Is Coming
When Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopens, riders will journey through a new Rainbow Caverns scene.

“After you arrive at the legendary Big Thunder Mining Company, descend into an active mine shaft and board your runaway train. As you enter the cavern, the engine speeds up along the rickety track. Dodge exploding dynamite and falling boulders as you swoop around turns, drop into canyons, and dart through the town of Tumbleweed,” the attraction’s new synopsis reads.
“Your rip-roaring adventure proves that some legends are true. You’re sure to have a real blast!”

While the refurbishment is still continuing, we do have an exciting update to share!

Here is another look.
“🚂 Big Thunder is roaring! As Walt Disney World grows, our cast continue to refresh classic attractions – like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – for guests to enjoy timeless thrills for years to come,” Disney captioned the post.
I, for one, can’t wait for Thunder Mountain to reopen!
