WATCH: See the Amazing Technology Used To Bring Disney’s Next-Generation Olaf Robot To Life

A monumental moment occurred at Disneyland Paris earlier this year, when Walt Disney Imagineering President and Chief Creative Officer Bruce Vaughn and President of Disneyland Paris Natacha Rafalski introduced Disney’s new Olaf animatronic.

The next-generation robotic character represented the beginning of a new chapter in Disney character innovation.

Between his fluid movements and expressive face, the new Olaf animatronic truly looks like he was lifted straight from the world of Frozen.

The Result of Storytelling and Technology

Collaborating with the film’s original animators, Imagineers ensured that every gesture was true to Olaf’s character.

Finally, like the BDX droids that have become so prevalent this year, Olaf is a free-roaming robotic character who can interact with guests and adapt to his environment.

To make the character as authentic as possible, Imagineers use reinforcement learning, a branch of artificial intelligence, to enable Olaf to walk and perform graceful motions.

As a whole, Olaf is the fantastic result of storytelling and innovation. He is also a preview of where Disney is heading next.

How the Olaf Robot Works

In a new YouTube video, the Disney Research Hub offers a closer look at the amazing technology used to bring Olaf to life.

While the video is VERY technical, it does a good job of explaining the challenges Imagineers faced and the creative solutions they came up with.

Personally, I loved to learn that Olaf’s nose and arms are magnetically attached, allowing them to be both secure and removable.
