Disney Imagineering Legend Eddie Sotto Has Passed Away at 67
The Disney world lost one of its brightest stars and greatest talents today with the passing of Eddie Sotto.
One of the titans of Imagineering, Eddie helped bring to life some of Disney’s most immersive lands and well-themed attractions.

More than that, however, Eddie embodied Disney’s spirit, exuding imagination, creativity, and a deep-seated care for guests.
Early Life Landmark Entertainment Group
Born March 14, 1958, in Los Angeles, California, Eddie Sotto was born into a Hollywood family.
His aunt, Marilyn Sotto, was a designer who worked on projects for Paramount, Universal, MGM, and Disney.

Growing up in the shadow of Disneyland, Sotto became enamored with the park. As a teenager, he built a 1/200-scale model of The Happiest Place on Earth using plans he received from WED Enterprises.
At 21, Sotto finally entered the themed entertainment industry, working as an assistant project director at Knott’s Berry Farm.

From there, he would go to work for Landmark Entertainment Group, designing attractions for Universal Studios Hollywood and Six Flags.
It was his work on the Laboratory of Scientific Wonders for a Six Flags project in Baltimore that would finally catch the attention of Walt Disney Imagineering.
Joining Disney
Sotto was brought into the fold by Tony Baxter, then vice president of design at WDI, who hired him as a show producer/designer for Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland Paris.

Eventually, he created what is arguably the best Main Street in the world.
Set firmly in 1900, Disneyland Paris’ Main Street, U.S.A., transports guests to a prosperous American town celebrating the dawn of the 21st Century.

Building on what made Main Street so special in the American parks, Paris’s land features wider streets, heavier ornamentation, and full upper floors to the buildings.
Sotto, along with mentor John Hench, was able to tell the land’s story through the architecture.

The additions of the Liberty Arcade, Discovery Arcade, and the Disneyland Hotel give Disneyland Paris’ Main Street, U.S.A., a grandiose feeling that the other versions of the land lack.
Other Disney Projects
After working on Disney and Paris, Sotto would continue his career in Imagineering for 13 years.

During that time, he oversaw the development of Indiana Jones Adventure for Disneyland, helped master plan Tokyo Disneyland, and worked on numerous other projects, including Disneyland’s Space Mountain, Pooh’s Hunny Hunt, Alice’s Tea Party, Aladdin’s Oasis, and Mission: Space.
Today, his voice can still be heard on the Walt Disney World Railroad.

Leaving Disney in 1999, Sotto founded his own design firm, SottoStudio.
A Staple of the Disney Fan Community
Though Eddie was no longer an Imagineer, he remained heavily involved in the Disney community, often sharing insights, stories, and opinions, and always willing to engage with fans.

Following the news of Eddie’s passing, his Imagineering peers were quick to pay tribute.
Jim Shull took to X to remember Sotto as both a friend and collaborator.
#Imagineering has lost one of its greatest talent with the passing of #EddieSotto, who was both a colleague and friend. We spent a night where Eddie gave his time and suggestions for #RocknRollerCoaster when it was due to open. Eddie will be missed. pic.twitter.com/aQMvIyFe9C

A Personal Note
On a personal note, Eddie Sotto was a hero of mine. Not only did he create immersive lands, unforgettable attractions, and the backdrop for millions of memories, but first and foremost, he was a Disney fan.

Growing up in the shadow of Disneyland, learning from the first-generation Imagineers, and eventually forging his own path, Eddie understood what made Disney so special.
When the theme parks waned from the quality and attention to detail that they were known for, Eddie called it out.
When Disney created something new and inspiring, he celebrated.

At a time when the Disney fandom can often seem contentious, Eddie continued to exude joy, grace, and a genuine love for his fellow fans.
Every time I got the opportunity to interact with Eddie, I not only felt like I was talking to a walking Disney encyclopedia but also to a kindred spirit who loved the parks, the company, and the history as much as I did.

I will miss him dearly. Thanks for everything, Eddie.
