Disney Goes Behind-the-Scenes of ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’
Avatar: Fire and Ash brings audiences back to Pandora this December, and fans are ready for the next chapter! The new film features a darker, more emotional chapter in James Cameron’s epic saga and takes fans on a dramatic journey.
Disney recently interviewed the film’s stars for behind-the-scenes clips and interviews, and they shared their highlights and insights from the much-anticipated movie.
A New Story

Set after the events of Avatar: The Way of Water, the film follows the Sully family as they cope with loss, shifting alliances, and rising threats across the moon’s fragile world.
The story begins with the Sully family still living among the Metkayina Clan while mourning Neteyam. Grief pushes Jake and Neytiri in different directions, creating strain inside their family and setting the tone for the film’s emotional feel.

“Both characters go back to their default,” Sam Worthington said. “Neytiri goes back to Eywa, and Jake goes back to soldiering. They’re both just trying to find a path through.”
Jake also faces a growing sense of vulnerability as new dangers emerge on Pandora. Neytiri, meanwhile, sinks into a darker place shaped by rage and unresolved pain.

“Neytiri is in such a dark place, and she can’t control herself,” Zoe Saldaña said. “She’s losing purpose, and she’s starting to question everything.”
A New Character

A major new presence in Fire and Ash is Varang. She is the leader of the Mangkwan Clan, played by Oona Chaplin.
After losing her home to a volcanic disaster, Varang rejects Eywa and turns grief into fuel for power, aligning herself with forces that threaten Pandora’s balance.

The film also follows the uneasy dynamic between Jake and Quaritch. Quaritch’s shifting loyalty and the revelation of his connection to Spider as his potentially biolgocial son adds new layers to his character.
Stephen Lang described the tension, “The juxtaposition of admiration and contempt that the two feel for each other is a very dynamic, volatile combination.”
Focus on Family

A lot is coming your way with the new movie, but at its core, Fire and Ash remains focused on family. The Sully children are forced to rely on one another, growing stronger through shared danger and loss.
Sigourney Weaver shared that the absence of rescue pushes them to define who they are becoming.
