Leading up to the release of Zootopia 2, all eyes were on the Chinese box office.
In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hollywood has largely been unable to penetrate the Chinese film market.

After years of courting Chinese audiences, without much to show for their efforts, it looked like Hollywood may have to pivot.
Unlike many Hollywood franchises, Zootopia has been embraced in China. The first animated film was already the 12th highest-grossing Hollywood film in the country.

Against this backdrop, Zootopia 2 hit theaters.
A Historic Debut
Very early on, it was evident that Zootopia 2 would be a massive success.

The film reunites audiences with Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps, who track the “twisting trail of a mysterious reptile who arrives in Zootopia and turns the mammal metropolis upside down.”

“To crack the case, Judy and Nick must go undercover to unexpected new parts of town. Where their growing partnership is tested like never before,” the film’s synopsis explains.

By the time the dust settled, Zootopia 2′s Chinese debut had brought in over $272 million, giving the film the biggest Hollywood animated opening ever.

Additionally, the latest Walt Disney Animation Studios fare is now the 15th-highest-grossing film of any origin.
