Disney+ Has Canceled the Planned ‘Holes’ Reboot

Earlier this year, Disney announced it had ordered a pilot for a new streaming series based on Holes, the 1998 bestseller by Louis Sachar.

The latest Disney foray into the young adult genre, the Holes adaptation, was written by Alina Mankin and produced by Drew Goddard, Sarah Esberg, and Liz Phang.

WandaVision and Agatha All Along creator Jac Schaeffer was set to direct the pilot.

“In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose,” the show’s synopsis read.

A Twist on the Classic ‘Holes’ Story

The Disney+ version of Holes was to follow the story of Hayley (Shay Rudolph), a teenage girl who arrives at Camp Yucca (renamed from Camp Green Lake).

“The Warden (Greg Kinnear) is the boss at Camp Yucca, with a flair for manipulation and getting the upper hand on his campers. He has created a camp ideology to explain the virtue of having girls dig holes. But this is actually a ruse. He is really forcing the girls to labor for a mysterious purpose,” the synopsis continued.

Rounding out the Holes cast were Aidy Bryant, Flor Delis Alicea, Anire Kim Amoda, Noah Cottrell, Aiesha Daniels, Sophie Dieterlen, Alexandra Doke, and Maeve Press.

Disney Has Canceled the Project

Unfortunately for fans, Disney has opted not to move forward with their Holes project.

While an official explanation for the project’s cancellation has not been given, Deadline notes that expectations for Holes were high. The project was not meeting those standards.

At this time, it does not appear that the project is being shopped to other platforms.

All in all, it is a disappointing end for a promising project.
