Disney and OpenAI Announce Landmark $1 Billion Deal That Will See Disney Characters Integrated Into Sora
In a move that will reshape the AI landscape, The Walt Disney Company and OpenAI have reached a landmark agreement to integrate Sora, OpenAI’s short-form generative AI video platform, with Disney content.
As part of the new three-year agreement, Sora will be able to generate sort, user-promoted social videos featuring more than 200 animated characters from across Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars.

These videos will also include Disney costumes, props, vehicles, and environments.

Additionally, ChatGPT will soon be able to create fully generated images of the same intellectual properties.

It is important to note, however, that the agreement does not include any talent likeness or voices.
“Disney is the global gold standard for storytelling, and we’re excited to partner to allow Sora and ChatGPT Images to expand the way people create and experience great content,” said Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI.

Disney’s $1 Billion Equity Investment
As part of the broad new deal, Disney will make a $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI and receive warrants to purchase a larger stake.

Additionally, Disney will use OpenAI’s API to “build new products, tools, and experiences, including for Disney+, and deploy ChatGPT for its employees.”
Fans will also be able to watch a curated section of Sora-generated videos on Disney+.

Protections Will Be Put in Place
Over the past several months, Disney has found itself embroiled in numerous controversies surrounding the use of its trademarked characters by AI platforms.

The company is currently suing both Midjourney and MiniMax.
As part of the new OpenAI deal, both parties will maintain robust controls to prevent the generation of illegal or harmful content. They are also pledging to respect the rights of content owners and talent.
